Articles and Press Releases

I write press releases regularly for the local paper for my job with the Garrett Soil Conservation District. The paper is familiar with my work and they print them as I write them. Some of my press releases are intended to provide news, but most of them are meant to market the District and its Fruit Tree and Bush fundraiser in a “newsworthy” package. Occasionally, I also write press releases for other organizations and purposes.

Newspaper article about a Liberty University Student
The article "Frazee accepted into Liberty University Honors program" was written not just to commemorate the young lady's accomplishments but also to give a plug for Liberty and for homeschool. The local school board is extremely powerful in this area and have been a media engine for discouraging homeschool. I wanted parents to know there are academy options for homeschool. What better way than to show someone excelling at one of the top universities after being homeschooled.
Newspaper Article
Newspaper Article Written for Garrett Soil Conservation District's Cooperator's Dinner. One of my jobs is to promote the Fruit Tree & Bush fundraiser without the District having to pay for advertising since they are dealing with public money. I try to slip it into many of our press releases, including this one which focused on information about the Maryland head of the NRCS visiting the area.
Press Release for Tree Sale
This is a press release that was published as an article in the local newspaper. I wanted to show the actual press release. I was commissioned with writing a press release that would basically advertise the Fruit Tree and Bush sale without the non-profit, governmental District having to pay for an ad. So, I wrote a story about it being the District's 80th birthday and included some newsworthy facts.
Newspaper Article about the GSCD scholarship
Article I wrote announcing the Garrett Soil Conservation District scholarship. The challenge with this press release is that the local paper usually puts scholarship announcements in less obvious areas of the paper. I needed to write a story long enough, and newsworthy enough to warrant an easily visible article.
