My Story
Where My Love for Web Development Started
I gave my life to the Lord when I was 14, and my life was forever, profoundly changed. In my 20’s, He led me to a job for a well-known entertainer who, though he was a secular actor; singer; and movie producer, strongly desired to witness to his fans and lead them to Christ. I worked for him for 10 years and was involved with merchandising and public relations, including running his fan club and website.
It was then that I gained a love for web development because I found that I could reach people all over the world with the message of Christ’s love. There were so many teens and young adults who listened to what we had to say because they were seeking love, acceptance, and a foundation. I saw lives changed for the better when they accepted Jesus, so I know how powerful a strong Christian example can be to this vulnerable age group, and how powerfully the web can be harnessed for that use.
Earning Credentials in Web Development, Digital Marketing, and Graphic Design
I have been involved in web development; graphic design; and marketing throughout my adult life in various ways, but because I did not have a degree, I went back to school, and in 2024, I graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Digital Media and Web Technology with a Minor in Marketing and a Certificate in Digital Marketing. I also have an Associate of Applied Science degree in Web and Graphic Design.
My Certificate was the result of an arrangement between UMGC and the Google and Facebook Corporations, whereby the class platform was designed by Facebook and the content by Google. Google’s stance is that they want to train Digital Marketers to create quality content to enhance user experience. Therefore, my style is to create high quality content based on what the public wants from the website. Important elements to accomplish this include keyword search, writing titles that help search engines find content, meta tags that lead search engines to the site, writing content that users want to read which is focused on their information searches, and creating content that is fresh and trendy.
My focus for Digital Media and Web Technology was Web Development, therefore, I am skilled in HTML, CSS, Responsive Design, UX Design, User Experience, and Multi-media.
Adding More Skills to Increase Expertise
When I started my degree, I was asked which area of web I would like to study. My answer was, and is, “the full package”. I wanted to see all the components and know how they fit together. Therefore, even though my focus was Web Development, I also studied Digital Media and Animation.
I’ve been a Graphic Designer most of my life, so I am skilled in web design, ad design, and social media marketing. I am highly experienced in RGB, Color Wheel Theory, Image Resolution needs, and User Experience Design.
In addition, I have strong writing skills. Some of my professional writing accomplishments include web pages, social media marketing, ads, press releases, newspaper articles, print media, books, periodicals, and newsletters.
My Desire to Serve Christ
I have two good jobs where I spend much of my time doing web development and digital marketing, however, I don’t feel like I’m using my skills for Christ as much as I could. I am helping farmers better their land and produce sales, but I am not spending my time at work in the mission to lead people to Christ.
I have some websites of my own where I do things like provide homeschool information to those who are seeking. But my mind often wonders back to the time when I was able to use my skills to truly reach people for Christ full time.
The typical college student is at an age of uncertainty. They are seeking, and the example they find at college may determine who they become for the rest of their lives. A number of years ago, I took my daughter to tour many Christian colleges as a project. I was disgusted to realize that most of the ones we saw called themselves “Christian”, but didn’t emulate Christ at all. In fact, many of them were actively driving students away from Christ.
Liberty is different. I have spent a great deal of time on your campus, and I see the difference. I see Christ at Liberty. Therefore, I truly believe in your mission to attract young college students so that you can lead them in the ways of the Lord.
A university is a business because it has to stay profitable to be able to fulfill it’s mission, but at the same time, Liberty’s focus on training Champions for Christ makes the difference. Without Christ as the vine, nothing can have life. Our world needs the light that Liberty is shining for our youth. And I would like to be part of it.
